May 4 - Paris' best baker wins the right to supply the Elysee palace in the fight for the best baguette. Tara Cleary reports.
Paris' best baguette fresh out of the oven. Baker Pascal Barillon beat hundreds of competitors to take the prestigious title. And as part of the reward, Barillon will now make bread for President Sarkozy and his family. (SOUNDBITE) Baker Pascal Barillon saying (French): "To have won, is first of all a great satisfaction, and it's going to give us the honour of supplying the President of the Republic. For a baker, to supply the President, it's an honour." The judging was serious business - after all, some of the previous winners have doubled their dough. But Barillon doesn't need a judge and jury to tell him he has the best bread - the bakery's faithful regulars have been telling him that for years. SOUNDBITE: Customer Camille Ronfard, saying (French): "We appreciate them a lot. We think the baguette is delicious and when we go on holiday, we're very happy to return to Paris to our baguette." And one of the judges shared this crumb of French culinary wisdom: the secret to a good baguette lies in the crust. Tara Cleary, Reuters.
