May 11 - The latest technological development in robots is the main focus of the Shanghai International Conference on Robotics and Automation in China. Elly Park reports.
They walk, crawl, and dance. Robots from all across the world, and their engineers, gathered in Shanghai at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation. The theme of the event was "Better Robots, Better Lives", and it attracted over 1,700 experts from nearly 100 countries who were eager to show off their latest inventions. The host of the event Kazuhiro Kosuge explains. SOUNDBITE: Kazuhiro Kosuge, President of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, saying (English) "The best robot is perhaps a robot that can serve us like a human does, and to do so, the robot has to know what you want, how you want to be helped and how you want to be assisted. To do so, the robot has to estimate what you are trying to do." This goal of improving humans' everyday lives was reflected everywhere - even a robot built to play football served a greater purpose, according to Robotics Sales and Marketing Director Jinwook Kim. SOUNDBITE: Jinwook Kim, Robotics Sales and Marketing Director, saying (English) "It is not a real product, I mean, this is a research platform. But in the near future, we expect a higher torque and a more accurate activiation system, so that people can really put (on robotic) arms or legs, which may help a handicapped person walk or manipulate what they want." Shanghai Jiaotong University's Fu Zhuang said that his tray-serving robot will reach greater audiences in the future. SOUNDBITE: Fu Zhuang, Professor At Institute Of Robotics Shanghai Jiaotong University, saying (Mandarin) "We've got some ideas for improving this robot, to increase its level of mobility, to allow it to not only serve food, but also help attend to sick people or help perform family chores for housewives. We want to increase its functionality." The conference, the first top robotics hosted in China, will continue until May 13th. Elly Park, Reuters.
