Aug. 8 - Jill Biden, the wife of the American vice president, tours a refugee camp in Kenya as a killer drought looms over East Africa. Andrew Raven reports.
A plane carrying the wife of US vice president Joe Biden touches down in Kenya. Jill Biden is in the country to tour a refugee camp, home to thousands of people from neighbouring Somalia. Many have fled their homes - some walking for weeks - to escape a killer drought in the Horn of Africa. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JILL BIDEN, WIFE OF U.S. VICE-PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: "One of the reasons for me to be here, is just to ask Americans and the people worldwide, the global community, the human family, if they could just reach a little bit deeper into their pockets and give money to help these poor people." Biden's trip is the highest-profile visit to drought-striken East Africa since June. That's when thousands of refugees began flooding into camps like this one. More than 12 million people in the region are in need of food aid, including nearly half of all Somalis. Andrew Raven, Reuters.
