Sept. 27 - Amateur video footage purports to show hundreds of Syrians converging in protest against the Assad regime. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Amateur video out of Syria shows a night time demonstration in Rastan Monday. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes amid reports Tuesday that Syrian forces have stormed the town. Footage purportedly out of Homs shows more night time demonstrations. The region around Homs has emerged as hotspots of armed resistance against President Bashar Al Assad. Local activists say rebel soldiers hit a tank Tuesday with a rocket propelled grenade. Video from Dera appears to show Syrian forces making arrests purportedly at a school for distinguished students. The United Nations says more than 2,700 Syrians, including 100 children, have been killed in a six-month-old revolt against Assad. The government blames the violence on armed gangs, who it says have killed 700 members of its security forces. And yet the demonstrations continues. Syria, under economic pressure from the turmoil and from Western sanctions took the drastic step of banning most imports last week to lessen demand for the dollar and preserve dwindling foreign currency reserves. Syria's Economy Minister told the official news agency the move was "temporary and pre-emptive" Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters
