Dec. 6 - Mexico sets the new stargazing record with 2,753 people observing the night sky at various points throughout the country. Kilmeny Duchardt reports.
2,753 Mexicans mounted their telescopes at 40 different points across the country - scoring the new Guinness World Record for the most people stargazing at multiple venues at one time. Dubbed "A Night of Stars", Mexico City's National Autonomous University was one of the busiest observation points. Sergio Melesio Nolasco hopes the event will shift the country's focus to more important subjects. (SOUNDBITE) Sergio Melesio Nolasco, saying (Spanish): "The level of general culture has fallen in many people. So, that is one of the important things, to foment the closeness of people with science so authorities can see that people are interested not only in foolishness from television comedies or political gossip but also in things that are much more profound and important like science." Guinness officials said that event organizers beat their previous 2009 record of 1,178. Kilmeny Duchardt, Reuters.
