Dec. 8 - Amateur video shows anti-government protests at funerals in Syria. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Amateur video out of Syria shows a funeral service in Homs. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, shows mourners chanting. More footage shows another funeral service in northwestern Syria. The funeral comes as the International Red Cross is calling the situation grave, but not a civil war. The United Nations says more than 4,000 people have been killed and more than 14,000 detained since the uprising began in March. The ferocity of President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown triggered desertions from the armed forces, and several thousand defectors have joined a guerrilla army staging hit-and-run attacks on security forces. Assad, whose family has ruled Syria for 41 years, is under growing international pressure to cease violent repression of protests. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters
