Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Beijing on Wednesday (July 18). Ban is in the Chinese capital to attend the opening of a China-Africa forum that kicks off on Thursday (July 19). The U.N. leader is expected to press Chinese leaders to back tougher action to stop the continued violence in Syria. China and Russia have twice vetoed resolutions condemning Damascus for its assault on the opposition. They are against imposing sanctions on Syria and want the U.N. mission to remain in place.
