July 21 - Police say Colorado shooting accused James Eagan Holmes had booby trapped his apartment as President Barack Obama pauses his campaign to mourn the 12 victims. Jessica Gray reports.
U.S. police remain foiled by the booby-trapped Colorado home of the 24 year old graduate student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 70 others at a screening of the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises". They say James Eagan Holmes stormed into the theatre in a suburban Denver multiplex just after midnight, tossing smoke bombs into the audience before seemingly shooting at random. The accused shooter also left a set of explosives in his apartment. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AURORA POLICE CHIEF, DAN OATES, SAYING: "I've seen an awful lot of wires, trip wires, jars full of ammunition, jars full of liquid, some things that look like mortar rounds. We have a lot of challenges to get in there safely." President Barack Obama paused his re-election campaign to give his sympathy to the victims and families members. SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "Michelle and I will be fortunate enough to hug our girls a little tighter tonight, and I'm sure you will do the same with your children. But for those parents who may not be so lucky, we have to embrace them and let them know we will be there for them as a nation." The black-clad gunman, who calls himself "The Joker" after the popular Batman villain, was taken into custody outside the theatre minutes after the murderous attack. Holmes is expected to make an initial court appearance on Monday. Jessica Gray, Reuters
