Aug. 6 - Syrian rebels say the Prime Minister's defection marked a ''turning point'' while amateur video showed government forces dropping bombs on Aleppo. Deborah Gembara reports.
Syrian forces sent a clear message to rebels in Aleppo. (Blast) We aren't going anywhere. They pounded the city with bombs and even forced some opposition members to retreat. Burn out tanks and anxious moment as rebels look for cover in this latest video posted to a social media website. Rebels say they aren't letting the blasts drown out the real news --- Prime Minister Riyad Hijab has abandoned the government. Syrian National Council President Abdullaset Sieda. SOUNDBITE: Syrian National Council President, Abdulbaset Sieda saying:(Arabic) "His defection is a turning point for the Syrian revolution." Syrian National Council president Abdulbasset Sieda. SOUNDBITE: Syrian National Council President, Abdulbaset Sieda saying(Arabic): This proves the confusion and erosion of the Syrian regime." The high profile defection is having a domino effect. Two cabinet members have also deserted and a third minister was reportedly arrested as he tried leave Damascus.
