Dec. 25 - Amateur video purportedly shows Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces launching air strikes on Damascus suburbs as rebels again bring fighting to the president's seat of power. Lindsey Parietti reports.
Syrians bury their dead - victims of an unrelenting battle that has lasted nearly two years. Amateur footage also purportedly shows government air strikes on Damascus suburbs. With superior weapons, President Bashar al-Assad's forces continue to bombard areas captured by rebels and fighting has intensified around the capital. Reuters cannot independently verify the footage posted online. Assad met with U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi Monday to discuss solutions to the crisis, but previous diplomatic efforts have failed to persuade the president to halt the violence. More than 44,000 have died since the conflict began with protests against Assad's rule last year.
