Apr.17 - The trial begins of former boss of French company PIP, manufacturers of faulty breast implants given to hundreds of thousands of women. (ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARATION)
The trial of the former boss of the company behind the global health scare which saw hundreds of thousands of women given substandard breast implants opens in southern France. PIP, the company founded by Jean-Claude Mas, was found to be using industrial-grade silicone not approved for medical use in its implants which were given to some 30,000 women in France alone. He and four co-defendents now face charges of aggrevated fraud which, if convicted could see them jailed for up to five years and face large fines. T The trial promises to be complex with thousands of women world-wide registering as plaintiffs, although the first day is likely to be largely procedural.
