June 8 - Amateur video shows rebels taking positions and clashing with government forces in north-eastern Syria. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Rebel soldiers open fire in southwest Syria. They struggle to hold what ground they can. The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes as Syrian government forces seized ground in the west extinguishing final rebel resistance around the town of Qusair in a fresh success for President Bashar al-Assad. A rebel tank opens fire before withdrawing. Airstrikes are increasingly becoming a way of life in Syria. They are also becoming a way of death as citizens struggle to save each other. Fire and destruction are becoming part of the landscape, in a war that has already killed more than 80,000 people. In a suburb of Damascus a power station is in flames, another front in a war where the end appears out of reach and the losses mount every day.
