Pope Francis enters a Catholic shrine to the Virgin Mary in Brazil as part of his week-long trip to Brazil, home of the world's largest Catholic population.
An estimated 150,000 people attended the service.
The pope focused on Catholic youth.
(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) POPE FRANCIS, SAYING:
"I too come to knock on the door of the house of Mary - who loved and raised Jesus - that she may help all of us, pastors of God's people, parents and educators, to pass on to our young people the values that can help them build a nation and a world which are more just, united and fraternal."
The 76 year old Pontiff has come to Brazil with his message of humility.
Later he will tour a drug treatment ward in Rio. Later in the week, he will . preside over services on Copacabana beach and over the weekend give mass at a pasture outside the city.
