Aug. 23 - Fallen politician Bo Xilai, charged with bribery, corruption and abuse of power, puts up a feisty defence on his second day of hearings. Sarah Toms reports.
From a rising political star to the dock....disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai returns to a court in eastern China for the second day of his corruption trial. Security is tight...but that didn't stop a group of people from voicing their support before being moved by police. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) ANOTHER UNIDENTIFIED LOCAL BO XILAI SUPPORTER FROM JINAN, SAYING: ''We ordinary citizens all know that Bo Xilai was an anti-gang-crime hero in Chongqing. The hero has been taken down, there is nothing we ordinary people can do. We want to attend his trial, but we are not allowed to. They call it a 'public' trial, but how is it 'public' if we ordinary people are not allowed to enter the courthouse?'' Bo - the former Chongqing Communist Party chief - is charged with taking almost 4.5 million dollars in bribes and abusing his power. The abuse of power charges relate to the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood - for which Bo's wife has already been convicted. In videotaped testimony - Gu Kailai, Bo's wife, described how Bo wielded his influence for friends like Dalian entrepreneur Xu Ming. (WOMAN ASKING: "WHAT KIND OF THINGS DID BO XILAI DO FOR XU MING?") "He did some things… Well, I should say, one thing I knew at that time, Bo Xilai was pretty interested in the Dalian football league. At that time, the Wanda team ran into some problems. Xu Ming wanted to buy this team, and, I'd say that Bo Xilai helped him acquire this." But Bo dismissed her comments, saying she was unstable. He has denied accepting bribes from businessmen and said he was coerced into a confession. It has been a dramatic fall from grace for Bo fall.....Two years ago he was seen as a candidate for China's top decisicion making body.....but after questions over Heywood's death, he's now fighting charges of which he'll almost certainly be found guilty.
