October 18 - James Corden and Julie Walters attend the European premiere of a comedy film following former Carphone Warehouse salesman-turned Opera singer Paul Potts's rise to fame, after he appeared on ITV's Britain's Got Talent. Joel Flynn reports.
It's an age-old story of redemption and triumph against all odds The modern day fairy tale which saw Welsh singer Paul Potts complete his rise from obscurity, debt and bullying to international opera star was completed on London on Thursday. Potts joined James Corden, Julie Walters and mega-producer Harvey Weinstein on the red carpet. They were attending the premiere of "Once Chance" - the movie about Potts' life. David Frankel is the film's director. SOUNDBITE: Director, David Frankel, saying (English): "I think there's also this fantastic Cinderella aspect that says that someday, one day, your prince will come, and whether that's in the form of another person who loves you and gives you unconditional support or somebody that gives you an opportunity to reveal your talent, and this was both." "One Chance" charts Potts' early years, from his childhood in Wales through to his audition of for talent show "Britain's Got Talent". That audition wowed the people across the world, and racked up tens of millions of views online. Corden's own rise to success is in many respects a mirror of Potts' own rise to fame. He said the experience and situation was easily summed up in one word. SOUNDBITE: Actor, James Corden, saying (English): "It's all very, very strange, but at the same time it's all I ever dreamt of, so you've just got to take it all with a bag of salt. That's the trick." Julie Walters plays Potts' mother in the movie. She said hers was a character that everyone could empathise with. SOUNDBITE: Actress, Julie Walters, saying (English): "Everyone's got a mother, or is a mother, so they'll understand that - that's how people will relate to her, and as for inspiration, I mean you get that from the script, really. Most of the inspiration is from the script, and from knowing a bit about Paul." "One Chance" is released on October 25.
