Nov. 19 - Larry Flynt makes an unlikely appeal to stop the execution of the serial killer who shot and nearly killed him. Linda So reports.
He's the face behind one of the America's most provocative magazines. Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler, is now making headlines for a different reason. He wants to stop the execution of the man who almost took his life. SOUNDBITE: LARRY FLYNT, PUBLISHER AND PRESIDENT OF FLYNT PUBLICATIONS, SAYING: You put a man in a 3X6 cell for the rest of his life, that's a lot of punishment, but if you snuff out his life with a lethal injection in a few seconds, his punishment is over." Joseph Paul Franklin tried to kill Flynt in a shooting in 1978. He says he was upset over a bi-racial photo spread in Hustler magazine. Flynt survived, but would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Now, his would-be killer is set to die by lethal injection from a new drug. In his appeal, Flynt says he's againt the secrecy behind it. Franklin is on death row in Missouri for killing eight people in racially motivated attacks in the 70s and 80s. SOUNDBITE: LARRY FLYNT, PUBLISHER AND PRESIDENT OF FLYNT PUBLICATIONS, SAYING: "I could easily support the death penalty if I felt it was a deterrent. But it's not, and there's no scientific or historical evidence that can prove otherwise, and when someone goes out to commit a heinous crime like murder, that criminal mind does not stop to think 'well, am I going to get life in prison or am I going to get the death penalty if I do this?'" With time running out for the convicted serial killer, Flynt says he's not optimistic Franklin's life will be spared. SOUNDBITE: LARRY FLYNT, PUBLISHER AND PRESIDENT OF FLYNT PUBLICATIONS, SAYING: "He was a neo-nazi racist, and his murders were very callous and very deliberate, and he killed and maimed a lot of people. So, chances are they will probably execute him, but not with my support." Franklin is scheduled to be executed at midnight on Wednesday.
