The world of sports will remember human rights champion Nelson Mandela as a man who recognised the significance of sports to help bring together a divided South Africa.
After becoming elected president in 1994, Mandela encouraged the entire population to support the previously despised Springbok rugby team as the country hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1995.
The team defied all the odds and went on to win the title against favourites New Zealand.
Mandela, wearing a Springbok rugby shirt, presented the trophy to the teams' captain in a symbolic act of reconciliation between white and black South Africans.
Mandela continued his role promoting sports when helped the country win the bid to host the 2010 World Cup.
