Feb. 14 - Chocolate hearts and puppy adoptions prove love is in the air at the Olympic Games, as Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulates Team USA and is presented with a Valentine's Day treat. Jillian Kitchener reports.
It's Valentine's Day and love is in the Sochi air. Heart-shaped cakes and mouth-watering swiss chocolates are being served up at the House of Switzerland. (SOUNDBITE)(English) HEAD OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION AT HOUSE OF SWITZERLAND, ALEXANDRE EDELMANN, SAYING: "Love is important in Switzerland as in many other countries so we try to be even more lovely then we usually are. We're giving some chocolates to the people queuing, in the restaurant the cake, the chocolate cake in the form of a heart so we tried to make a little bit of something just to share the love around us." The cakes are meant to be shared - allowing couples to get even closer. Even Russian President Vladimir Putin got into the spirit of the day - visiting the USA House to congratulate athletes on their performance in the games. He is presented with a Team USA Valentine's Day pin - with six tiny hearts and a special inscription. It's puppy love for U.S. skiing slopestyle silver medallist Gus Kenworthy. He wants to leave the Olympics with his medal… and a family of stray dogs. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SKIING SLOPESTYLE SILVER MEDALLIST, GUS KENWORTHY, SAYING: "I am not sure if I will necessarily keep all of them for myself, but I am definitely trying to bring them all them back to the States." (REPORTER ASKS IF THERE WERE A LOT OF RESPONSES TO HIS TWEETS) "Yeah, a lot of girls like Olympians and puppies, which has been overwhelming, but yeah, it's been sweet, a lot of like humane shelters have been hitting me up too, which is pretty cool. But yeah, I don't know, I don't think it is that crazy, I guess everyone else thinks it's crazy, but I am just trying to bring some dogs home." Animal rights activists are outraged by the methods used to rid Sochi of stray dogs, leading up to the Winter Games. And Valentine's Day seems like the perfect time to take action - to fall in love with the animals and provide them with a life of comfort.
