ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Veteran rockers Queen are set to continue their reign with American Idol alumni Adam Lambert. The band held a press conference at New York's Madison Square Garden to announce their upcoming summer arena tour on Thursday (March 6). "Each time we've worked with Adam it's just worked very well with our music. He's the most incredible front man and we're delighted to be announcing a tour of North America. It's just such a delight for us," said co-founding member Roger Taylor. Lambert, who said he has been a fan since he was a child, called being a part of the tour an honor. May and Taylor first learned about Lambert after his first appearance on the television singing competition American Idol in 2009 but said they weren't looking for a new front man. Queen first burst on to the scene in 1970 and since then have amassed record sales in the hundreds of millions and numerous number one singles. The British-born group is best known for their hits "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions." The band and Lambert first teamed up on the finale of Idol and since then have done various spot performances. For Lambert stepping into Mercury's shoes was daunting but rewarding. "I think when we first started doing this, especially when we did Europe and the UK in particular, where the band is from, I was a bit apprehensive. Because I thought I hope people are into this because now we are getting die-hard Queen fans in the audience. But for me the most important thing was to try and make it my own. Because I almost feel like imitating would almost be disrespectful and kind of corny," said Lambert. Lead singer Freddie Mercury died in 1991. May is convinced Mercury would approve of the union. "He would love Adam, no doubt about that. They have a lot in common and you know, Freddie would respect the quality of the performance that Adam gives. I have no doubt about that," he told Reuters. The group said the 19-date tour will be filled with all that is expected of a typical Queen show. Queen + Adam Lambert will kick off their tour in Chicago, Illinois on June 19.
