March 11 - A group of families who've lost family members to deportations protests against the immigration system. Nathan Frandino reports.
Feeling hopeless over government gridlock, this crowd of families in California is heading for the border. They're protesting against what they say is a broken immigration system. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOSELYN RODRIGUEZ SAYING: "Dad, we're waiting for you." Joselyn Rodriguez, whose dad is in Mexico, was one of many protesters there at the Otay Mesa border. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOSELYN RODRIGUEZ SAYING: "It was three years ago he shipped me off for basic training. He gave me my blessing, and this was the last time I got to see him." On the Mexican side of the border, the deported stood in unity. Shirlene Rodriguez is trying to get her stepson back through political asylum. She says it's a last resort. (SOUNDBITE) (English) SHIRLENE RODRIGUEZ SAYING: "It didn't work out, so this is our only avenue left to bring him home." Reports say about 150 people tried requesting asylum at the border on Monday.
