April 4 - A California pre-teen is believed to be the youngest certified female yoga instructor in the U.S. -- balancing the ancient practice with homework and student life. Jillian Kitchener reports.
This 12-year-old may have a different set of priorities, but she balances them well. Between her passion for the ukulele, homework and surfing, she's managed to complete 200 hours of professional yoga training. She's believed to be the youngest female yoga instructor in the U.S. And while she isn't old enough to drive herself to class, each week students stretch and bend under her watchful eye. (SOUNDBITE) (English) 12-YEAR-OLD YOGA INSTRUCTOR JAYSEA DEVOE SAYING: "When you go in, you have to go in kind of calm and then once you're calm it really reacts on your students and they become calm and start to listen and respect everything." Jaysea is getting a lot of respect, for teaching students her own age, as well as preschoolers as young as four: (SOUNDBITE) (English) 12-YEAR-OLD YOGA INSTRUCTOR JAYSEA DEVOE SAYING: "Well, age doesn't matter as long as you can have the strength to do it. And really it's just about setting your mind to something and setting goals, and anyone can achieve their goals no matter what age they are if they really want it, they can always achieve it." She's achieved her goals with her parents support, much to her father's pride: (SOUNDBITE) (English) RICK DEVOE, JAYSEA'S FATHER, SAYING: "We count on her, she's like one of the main anchors in our family. We talk to her like an, you know, we don't talk to her like a kid, we talk to her like an adult and let her make adult decisions." So what's next for this mature 12-year-old? In addition to starting a family yoga class… (SOUNDBITE) (English) 12-YEAR-OLD YOGA INSTRUCTOR JAYSEA DEVOE SAYING: "I kind of want to make yoga mats so I've been researching a lot about that, but doing like customizing them and making a business with that and teaching yoga. I'm going to do a stand up paddle yoga teacher training certification in Hawaii, and I'm going to become a yoga teacher for paddle boards, so you're doing yoga on paddle boards." With deep breathes and inward focus, Jaysea is a down to earth kid... with her feet firmly planted.
