May 14 - Syrian rebels seeking to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad attempt to take over a checkpoint in Idlib province. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
This is the battle for control of a checkpoint in Syria's Idlib province. Video obtained by Reuters shows members of the Free Syrian Army launching fire power hoping to take over a checkpoint leading into a military camp. The fighting follows a rebel attack in early May near the town, where activists said 30 Syrian government fighters were killed. More than 150,000 people have been killed in the three-year-old rebellion in Syria. On Tuesday, UN mediator Lakdar Brahimi said he would step down at the end of the month. He said he was leaving with a "heavy heart because so little was achieved." With international powers deadlocked over a resolution, fighting is expected to continue into the days and nights ahead.
