May 23 - Pro-Russian separatists clash with Ukrainian self-defense forces, leaving an unknown number dead in the town of Karlovka. Nathan Frandino reports.
Bullets and bloodshed rock eastern Ukraine. Heavy fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian self-defense forces leave at least two people killed. Militia sources say the firefight happened at a checkpoint near the rural town of Karlovka - west of Donetsk. One man who was at a local cafe when the attack happened says he's frustrated with the violence. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) (ROUGH TRANSLATION) IGAR, MUSICIAN NAMED IGAR WHO WAS PLAYING AT THE CAFE DURING THE ATTACK, SAYING: "I'm a citizen of the Donbass region. I'm not a fool -- I finished school with the highest marks, except in three subjects. But what is now happening in Donbass, for a person who understands politics, I just don't get it." In Peski, pro-Russian separatists gathered on a roadside dressed in battle fatigues. One of the fighters described what happened. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) PRO-RUSSIAN SEPARATIST FIGHTER, SAYING: "We had a fight with the Right Sector militants. They fired at us and four members of our military unit were killed and two civilians are dead and three severely wounded." The clash comes a day after at least 13 Ukrainian servicemen were killed in Volnovakha and days ahead of the Ukrainian national election.
