May 29 - Beijing's first Madame Tussauds has Hong Kong actress Carina Lau face-to-face with her wax counterpart. Elly Park reports.
Carina Lau meets Carina Lau in Beijing. The Hong Kong actress launched the Chinese capital's first Madame Tussauds by unveiling her own lifelike wax double. The 48-year-old star was surprised by the striking resemblance. SOUNDBITE: Hong Kong Actress Carina Lau saying (Mandarin) "Everyone thinks that they are irreplaceable, but here before me is another me. It's a very mysterious feeling" Beijing is the fourth Chinese location for the popular London-based wax museum that sees a huge growth opportunity in Asia, said spokesperson Craig Dunkerley. SOUNDBITE: Merlin Entertainment Group's Head of Openings for Asia and Europe, Craig Dunkerley saying (English) "Asia is our biggest growth market, so we're looking at rolling out, you know, two, three, four attractions a year across Asia, and China within Asia, the demand for sort of, you know, the type of entertainment that we offer is just increasing all the time." And to appeal to local visitors the museum offers not only international celebrities but also Chinese stars such as actor Jackie Chan and Chinese rock star Cui Jian. Madame Tussauds has already been in the mainland's financial hub Shanghai for a decade, and has outlets in the central city of Wuhan as well as the former British colony of Hong Kong.
