Wikimedia, the owner of Wikipedia, is embroiled in a legal debate over the copyright of a picture showing a monkey taking a ''selfie.'' Elly Park reports.
If a monkey takes a selfie, who owns the copyright? According to Wikimedia, the organization behind Wikipedia -- no one. This picture is the result of some serious monkey business when British photographer David Slater was taking shots of crested black macaques in Indonesia back in 2011. During the photo shoot some of the monkeys took his equipment and accidentally snapped a number of selfies that went viral on the web. Since then Slater has been trying to get Wikimedia to stop distributing the photos for free, but they contend that because Slater did not physically take the picture, he doesn't own them. The case has sparked new debates about the ambiguous nature of intellectual property rights in the age of the internet.
