His arrest shocked the country and now former Portuguese prime minister Jose Socrates has been charged. After three days of questioning, he was accused of corruption and tax fraud... and remanded in custody. His lawyer has vowed to fight the allegations, which carry a prison sentence of up to eight years. (SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) JOSE SOCRATES LAWYER, JOAO ARAUJO, SAYING/: "The decision in my opinion is profoundly unfair and unjustified. A lawyer would say that. But this time it is sincere and if my client doesn't tell me otherwise, I will present an appeal." Socrates resigned as prime minister three years ago as an escalating debt crisis forced him to seek an international bailout for Portugal. The charges could upset the country's Socialist party - it's hoping to win next year's election. The former leader's detention follows other cases this year as prosecutors intensify a fight against corruption. Three other individuals linked to Socrates were also arrested, including his driver. Citing leaked police material, local media said he was suspected of transporting large sums in cash by car from Portugal to Paris, where Socrates is living. The government has also been rattled by the recent arrest of the immigration service chief on suspicions of corruption. That case is linked to the issuing of "golden visas" to wealthy foreigners who invested in property.
