New video released by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula purports to show the capture of a Yemeni army camp. Paul Chapman reports.
Footage posted on the internet by Al Qaeda purports to show affiliated Ansar al-Sharia fighters capturing an army base in southern Yemen. The heavily produced video shows what appear to be strikes on the target. The footage was posted on March 13th but the attack was said to have taken place on February 12th. It continues with scenes of fighting in daylight. There's been no official comment from the government on the incident. But local residents and news sources say the base in the southern province of Shabwa fell after heavy fighting and a seige lasting several hours. The video ends with a succession of images showing what appear to be weapons and equipment apparently seized from the camp. Shabwa is a stronghold of Al Qaeda and like-minded militants. Ansar al-Sharia has in the past taken advantage of Yemen's political chaos to seize entire towns and provinces before being pushed back by the military.
