Ethiopian police fire tear-gas at demonstrators during a protest against the recent beheading and shooting of 30 Ethiopian Christians by Islamic State militants in Libya. Mana Rabiee reports.
(nats violence) It was a government-organized demonstration that spiralled out of control. The clashes erupted in Meskel Square after Prime Minister Hailemariam (HALI-MAH-RI-AM DESA-LEN) Desalegn spoke at a mass rally to denounce Islamic State. The rally had started peacefully enough... (nats friendly chanting earlier in the day) It had been organized to show solidarity with the 30 Ethiopian Christians shot and beheaded by IS and shown in video released over the weekend. Many of the victims are believed to have gone to Libya for a chance to cross over with other migrants into Europe. The mother of one of the men says she wants justice. (SOUNDBITE) (Amharic) MOTHER TO ONE OF THE VICTIMS, SAYING: "I want the international community not to sit down until these devils are destroyed and until these human traffickers are collected one by one." (nats violence again) The anger quickly spilled over into violence. Protesters hurled stones and police fired back with teargas. Demonstrators were rounded up and beaten. Many were reportedly arrested...although emotions are still running high.
