Illegal migrants trying to reach Europe attempt to sneak across the Greek border into Macedonia under the shadows of the forests, only to be repelled by Macedonian border guards and warning shots. Nathan Frandino reports.
On a Greek countryside, dozens of migrants are walking along the border with Macedonia. They're searching for a better life... one that many believe can be found in Europe. This march of migrants has become a daily sight for local farmers. (SOUNDBITE)(Greek) IDOMENI VILLAGE FARMER LAZAROS OULIS SAYING: "It is so overwhelming that we cannot handle it in our village." Many of the migrants are also taking their chances with Macedonian border guards... who fire warning shots to deter them. One Afghan migrant says it's a constant struggle. (SOUNDBITE)(English) IMAL, AFGHAN ILLEGAL MIGRANT, SAYING: "In every night, every night, we go in this border, in this border and try, but they are catch (us). The police arrest me, catch (me), and they tell me go, go out from that place." About 90 migrants tried crossing while hidden on a cargo train this week, but they were caught and taken to this border police station. Danielle Ballantyne of Doctors Without Borders says many of the migrants need medical treatment. (SOUNDBITE)(English) DANIELLE BALLANTYNE, DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS MEDICAL ACTIVITY CO-ORDINATOR , SAYING: "A lot of the injuries at the moment that we are seeing are things like blisters, dehydration, which of course, when the weather gets a lot hotter that we are going to see this, they are not used to having this kind of lifestyle where they don't know where they are going to sleep so it could be out in the open, so there are a lot of coughs and colds at night-time because it can get very cold in Idomeni." The organization is urging Greece to improve its asylum procedures to hinder the migrants from continuing their perilous journey.
