Authorities say more than 4,200 migrants trying to reach Europe have been rescued from boats in the Mediterranean in last 24 hours. Jillian Kitchener reports.
They've survived rocky seas ... and finally reach land. Stepping off a British naval vessel in the Italian port of Taranto, 700 migrants here have been saved. According to the Italian coast guard, they're among more than 4,200 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean in the last 24 hours. Authorities say they were trying to reach Europe, but got stranded on fishing boats and rubber dinghies. And 22 operations, including ships from Italy, Belgium and Britain, made the rescue possible. The Italian navy says 17 bodies were found on one of the boats off Libya. ...increasing this year's death toll of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, which the UN refugee agency estimates to be around 1,800. Thousands more this year have been escaping war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East... and pouring into Italy, while the EU scrambles to find a solution to the crisis.
