A pilot from Northern Ireland is hoping to set a new record with his gyrocopter flight across the U.S. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Pilot Norman Surplus took off in his gyrocopter on Thursday (June 4) in an attempt to set a world record with a coast-to-coast flight across the United States. Surplus left Tillamook, Oregon bound for Portland, Maine, hoping to break the world record for gyrocopter flight. He expects his quest to take about three weeks, taking him through a least a dozen different states, from Idaho to Maine. A gyrocopter uses an unpowered rotor, along with a motorized propeller. Surplus is a veteran of gyrocopter flight, having already flown his craft 13,000 miles through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
