The Italian coastguard rescues nearly 500 migrants at sea over the last two days, many of whom are children crammed into rickety vessels trying to cross the Mediterranean. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
ROUGH CUT, NO NARRATION STORY: The Italian coastguard said on Thursday (June 11) they have rescued close to 500 migrants from the Mediterranean over the last two days, with many of those taken into care being young children. Video filmed by the coastguard showed very young children being transferred at sea from crammed migrant vessels onto ships that would eventually bring them to safety at Italian ports. Italy has been on the front lines of the Mediterranean migrant crisis, seeing more than 50,000 people arrive this year, mostly in overcrowded fishing boats and rubber dinghies. It has called repeatedly for more assistance from the European Union but has so far made little headway in persuading other EU countries to take in more of the arrivals.
