Actor Dick Van Patten, who starred in the hit TV show ''Eight is Enough,'' dies at age 86. Phil Furey reports.
Dick Van Patten, a mainstay on U.S. television as the amiable patriarch on the family show "Eight Is Enough," has died. Van Patten passed away at a hospital in Santa Monica, California, from complications from diabetes. He was 86. The actor, whose career spanned about eight decades, was known for a big smile framed by prominent cheeks and an effusive personality. He came from a family of entertainers and got his first Broadway role at age 7 in 1935. But the role that made him a household name was that of Tom Bradford, a newspaper columnist who, with his wife, presided over a brood of five daughters and three sons, on "Eight Is Enough." The popular sitcom ran for five seasons on ABC beginning in 1977.
