Amateur videos, posted on social media websites, purport to show fighting between the Syrian army and Islamic State forces in the city of Hasaka. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Amateur video released by a group affiliated with Islamic State appears to show a massive explosion in Hasaka, Syria Sunday. The video which can not be independently verified by Reuters shows fires raging at at petroleum factory that came under attack by IS militants. Footage purportedly shot Monday shows Islamic State fighters on the offensive against Syrian government forces in Hasaka -- a city important for all sides in the conflict as it sits between IS-held territory in Syria and in nearby Iraq. Hasaka has been divided into areas run separately by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government and regional Kurdish authorities. Many have already fled the violence when Islamic State stormed the city last week -- Syrian State TV says it has cleared part of the city -- as the fight goes on.
