The Italian coast guard says some 4,400 migrants were rescued from several boats and rubber dinghies in the Mediterranean over the course of one day. Elly Park reports.
The Italian coast guard released this video on Sunday of rescue operations of thousands of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea over the course of one day. According to Italian authorities some 4,400 migrants were rescued in around 22 operations carried on Saturday. The migrants were provided with water and life jackets before being transferred onto a larger vessel to be taken to land. Europe is struggling to cope with a record influx of migrants as they flee war in Middle Eastern countries such as Syria. The Mediterranean has become the world's most deadly crossing point for migrants. According to the International Organisation for Migration more than 2,300 people have died this year in attempts to reach Europe by boat.
