Migrants attempting to break through a police cordon clash with police as they try to set off in the direction of Budapest, and then beyond to Austria and Germany. Gavino Garay reports.
The migrants had been in the process of being escorted by Hungarian police to a transit camp from Roszke near the Serbian border. But when they reached the motorway leading to Budapest, they started walking against the traffic in the direction Budapest --- where they hoped to continue their journey north and west in search of more prosperous lives. Police formed a cordon across the road and the migrants started pushing through the line. That's when officers used pepper spray on the crowds. Tensions have been running high at the camp near the Serbian border, where Hungarian authorities are trying to stem the flow of mainly Syrian refugees. It's become the worst migrant crisis since World War Two... and is prompting more and European leaders to call for decisive action.
