International human rights lawyer Amal Clooney - wife of actor George Clooney - is trying to win the freedom of imprisoned former Maldives president, Mohammed Nasheed. Deborah Gembara reports.
International human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, is in the Maldives to represent Mohammed Nasheed, the country's jailed former president. Clooney, who's married to actor George Clooney, has been meeting with Nasheed at the island prison where he's being held. The former leader was sentenced to 13 years in jail for ordering the arrest of a judge. The United Nations and several human rights groups say Nasheed wasn't given due process and that the case is politically motivated. (SOUNDBITE) INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER AMAL CLOONEY, SAYING: "Well, President Nasheed is in remarkably good spirits. He wanted me to convey to the people of the Maldives that they should remain hopeful that things will improve and that he is pleased that I will be attending meetings on his behalf with the government this week." Clooney and the rest of Nasheed's legal team are appealing the sentence and hope to secure his freedom.
