Israeli security have shot dead a knife-wielding Palestinian woman at a West Bank checkpoint, the latest incident in a series of Palestinian knife attacks. Natasha Howitt reports.
Israeli security officers have shot dead a Palestinian woman in the West Bank after she tried to stab them, officials say. Israel's Defence Ministry said in a statement that the woman approached an Israeli checkpoint in the occupied West Bank wielding a knife. When she didn't stop, the statement said, they "opened fire and neutralized the threat." The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the woman had been killed. The incident is the latest in an outbreak of violence in the region. Since October 1, 12 Israelis have been killed in street attacks by Palestinians. Israeli forces have killed at least 73 Palestinians, 44 of which Israel says were carrying out - or about to carry out - attacks with knives, guns or cars. Many were teenagers. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in the U.S. earlier today ahead of talks with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House. Ways to calm the violence are expected to be up for discussion.
