Founder of outdoor clothing and equipment company The North Face, Douglas Tompkins, dies during a kayaking trip in Chile. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
The journey comes to an end for North Face founder Douglas Tompkins, during a kayaking trip in Chile. Tompkins was on General Carrera Lake in Patagonia in southern Chile with a group of five others when his kayak flipped and he fell into the icy waters. Authorities say investigations continue to determine just what exactly happened. The kayakers were rescued by the Chilean Navy. Tompkins´s five companions were unharmed. Doctors did what they could to save Tompkins' life. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DOCTOR, SERGIO GAETE, SAYING: "We tried everything possible, thinking we could turn the situation of hypothermia into our favor, but after several hours we realized that the situation was irreversible." A family spokesman said "We are all shocked, though in some way he was doing what he loved, enjoying nature." Tompkins was 72 years old.
