Colombia mistaken as Miss Universe 2015, Philippines actual winner. Jane Witherspoon reports
Trumped by Miss Philippines. This was the moment Christmas came and went too quickly for Miss Columbia as she was mistakenly crowned and then de-throned of her Miss Universe title. The gaff happened as pageant host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the wrong winner on live TV. Joy turned to disbelief for the Columbians supporters. Stunned, the group slowly hushed as they stared at the television screen in a state of shock and disbelief. SOUNDBITE President of the Sucre Beauty Committee, Lucy Cruz, saying (Spanish translated into English): "We were happy with the win and then all of a sudden… never before has something like this happened in the history of the contest; that a contestant is crowned and then they take the crown from her because there was a mistake. It perplexed us. We don't have the connotation to say what we are feeling, but all the same, I want to send a message saying that she (Miss Colombia) was marvellous. That the people of Sucre, that the people of Colombia were with her until the end and that we are happy for what she was able to accomplish at Miss Universe." And there were mixed emotions in the Philippines as fans sympathised with the eventual runner up while celebrating their natives win. (SOUNDBITE) Vendor, Rudy Nuguid, saying (Filipino translated into English): "We were sad when we first saw the announcement of the judges on Miss Universe, but when we saw how the crown was removed from Colombia, we were overjoyed to see that she (Miss Philippines) was the real winner." (SOUNDBITE) 21 year old student, Rose Valios, saying (Filipino translated into English): "I sympathize for Colombia because you can see the other contestants and the former 2014 Miss universe comforting her, so it was a pitiful and humiliating experience. It was not Miss Colombia's fault being announced the winner, but was actually only a runner-up. An unexpected twist to the 64th Miss Universe competition.
