Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko meet with President Benigno Aquino after arriving for an official visit. Rough cut. (No reporter narration)
Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko arrived in Manila on Tuesday (January 26) for a five-day visit to the Philippines. Philippine President Benigno Aquino welcomed the Japanese imperial couple after they disembarked from a Japanese plane at Manila's international airport. This is the first trip by a Japanese reigning royal to the Southeast Asian region, and comes just over 70 years since the end of World War II. This year, Japan and the Philippines are celebrating 60 years since the reestablishment of their diplomatic relations. While in Manila, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will receive a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace, a meeting with Japanese residents and trainees of a Japanese language centre, and a visit to a Japanese World War II memorial garden.
