A massive fire at Kofkoff Egg Farms in Lebanon, Connecticut kills at least 80,000 chickens. Jillian Kitchener reports.
More than 80,000 chickens were reportedly killed when Kofkoff Egg Farms near Lebanon, Connecticut went up in flames Tuesday night... It's the largest egg producer in New England. 150 firefighters responded to the fire but witnesses say there was little they could do to save the birds. (SOUNDBITE) WITNESS, ROBERT POTTER, SAYING: ..."black billowing smoke in the sky and I knew it was massive. And I was probably at least 8 miles from the scene." Investigators are looking into HOW this fire started. ... 27 years to the day a fire at the same farm killed more than 200,000 chickens, according to officials. (SOUNDBITE) LEBANON RESIDENT, LES STRONG, SAYING: "I'm thinking this is terrible for Lebanon. I mean these guys supply a lot of eggs and everything like that. Plus people's jobs." Authorities say there were no injuries to humans, although the business itself could take months to recover.
