Jill Biden, the wife of Vice-President Joe Biden, helps workers in Virginia lay the keel for a new nuclear-powered attack submarine, the USS Delaware. Diane Hodges reports.
Construction on the USS Delaware began at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, in 2013, but it wasn't until Saturday when the keel was laid. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice-President Joe Biden, is the official sponsor of the nuclear-powered submarine. Her initials now become a permanent part of its structure. She praised the work that has been done on the vessel. (SOUNDBITE) JILL BIDEN, SAYING: "You need the very best equipment and technology that we can provide, and soon that will include the USS Delaware.." The Delaware will be the 18th submarine of the U.S. Navy's so-called Virginia class of submarines, which is designed for a wide variety of missions, including launching Tomahawk cruise missiles, transporting Special Operations Forces, and conducting surveillance missions. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
