The death toll rises slightly after an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at a shopping mall in Munich, who authorities say was a lone shooter. Gavino Garay reports.
This was not how a Friday evening spent shopping in Munich was supposed to end. Munich police say at least ten people were killed in a shooting rampage at a mall in the southern German city. The shooter, an 18-year-old German-Iranian, has also died. Another victim died from wounds sustained in the attack. Authorities believe the gunman killed himself and was the sole shooter in the attack, contrary to earlier reports and witness statements that there had been possibly three gunmen. Area residents were asked to stay in their homes as police worked to free those who were still inside the mall. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RESIDENT OF NEIGHBOURING BUILDING, NO NAME GIVEN, SAYING: "I heard several shots, four or five, and screams. At first I didn't react, not until the second time, I thought it could be fireworks. Then I heard another four or five shots, went out on to the balcony and I saw that somebody was running around there on the parking level with a handgun and shouting. Then I heard people screaming and I thought 'what's going on?' Witnesses to the shooting were asked not to post photos or videos of the attack on social media -- advice largely heeded by the community with few videos surfacing online. Europe has been shaken by a recent spate of attacks, this is the third major act of violence in in just eight days.. Authorities are now working to figure what this attacker's motive may have been.
