U.S. actor Robert De Niro says Republican presidential hopeful, Donald Trump should not be running for president whilst being honoured at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Francis Maguire reports.
If you happen to be in Sarajevo right now and looking to jump in a taxi... There's a chance you might just see pictures of the infamous movie character Travis Bickle hanging on a window. Around 300 cab drivers in the Bosnian city have paid tribute to Robert De Niro, who played Bickle, and celebrated the 40th anniversary of his classic 'Taxi Driver'. De Niro himself is in town at the Sarajevo Film Festival to pick up a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to film. During a panel event the 73 year-old actor was asked about American politics as the U.S. gears up for an election. And thatw as when he criticised Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump. Soundbite, Actor, Robert De Niro, saying (English): "I mean, one of the things to me was just the irony of... at the end he's back driving the cab, he's... celebrated, which is kind of relevant in some way today too. I don't know... it's crazy to have people like Donald Trump who are totally... shouldn't even, shouldn't even be where he is... so... God help us. (sound of people applauding). I think that people are now, and I don't want to go off on this, but I think people now are starting really to push back and media, they've given him all this attention, and finally they are starting to say - c'mon Donald, this is ridiculous, this is nuts, this is insane. Because what he's been saying is really totally crazy, ridiculous stuff, that he shouldn't be even... it's...it's totally nuts." De Niro opened the Sarajevo Film Festival which was founded as an act of defiance during the city's siege between 1992-1995 in the Bosnian War.
