Gunfire can be heard in the background. There has been a recent surge in fighting in the region, where Kiev is fighting pro-Russian separatists. The Defence Ministry says two soldiers have been killed and eight wounded in the past 24 hours. U.S. Vice President Joe Biden spoke by phone on Friday with Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko, underscoring the need to de-escalate the situation, a White House statement said. The statement added that Biden had sent a message to Russia on behalf of the U.S. saying "the world is watching".
