U.S. President Barack Obama may speak informally with Philippine counterpart Rodrigo Duterte but is not expected to hold a bilateral meeting during a summit in Laos, after Duterte called Obama a ''son of a whore.'' Jillian Kitchener reports.
The name calling started BEFORE any formal meetings took place...and while President Obama may still speak casually with Philippine counterpart, Rodrigo Duterte.. … a FORMAL meeting at the Laos summit is off the table, since Duterte forewarned Obama NOT to question him about a surge of killings in his campaign against illegal drugs. (SOUNDBITE) (English/Filipino) PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT, RODRIGO DUTERTE, SAYING: " I do not have any master except the Filipino people... You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. (IN FILIPINO) Son of a whore I will swear at you in that forum." OBAMA SOT: He's a colorful guy Obama says that if and when he meets Duterte, the war on drugs WILL be brought up. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, BARACK OBAMA, SAYING: "I always want to make sure that if I'm having a meeting, that it's actually productive and we're getting something done…" Duterte has since expressed regret about his choice of words. Although for the administration, it may have come too late for the summit.
