Sony reveals two new PlayStation 4 video game consoles and provides details on its PlayStation VR system before the headset hits shelves next month. Conway Gittens reports.
The stage is set for the battle over which video game console will dominate this holiday season. (REPORTER'S BRIDGE) CONWAY G. GITTENS, REPORTER, REUTERS, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "I'm Conway Gittens at the global launch of not just one, but two new Sony PlayStation 4s. The first one is a thinner, cheaper version of the original PlayStation 4. The second one, called PlayStation 4 Pro is for hard-core gamers." Both models will hit store shelves in time for Christmas, but it's the Pro version that will give Sony a technological head start over rival Microsoft. The Pro will play games in 4K resolution - that's the next level of high-definition video - and display the intense images of HDR or High Dynamic Range, which also means it's virtual-reality ready. Next up for Sony - Virtual Reality headsets. Juan Martinez covers the gaming industry for PC Magazine. (SOUNDBITE) JUAN MARTINEZ, SENIOR EDITOR, BUSINESS, PC MAGAZINE, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Right now PlayStation VR set to come out in October, I think, that will be the big game-changer. If PlayStation VR is what everyone expects it to be, Sony will be the leader in game play virtual reality." That leaves Microsoft in the dust. Its next generation Xbox, codenamed Project Scorpio, is not expected to make its debut until the holiday season of 2017.
