Harrowing video shows migrants being pulled up from sinking rubber boat. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: The Italian coast guard on Wednesday released video of migrants being picked up from the sea with their rubber boat almost completely submerged in the Mediterranean. The footage was filmed during rescue operations on Sunday and Monday, the coast guard said in a statement without giving specific details. Migrants wearing life vests can be seen hanging onto the side of their rubber boat still above the surface of the sea as others swim towards the rescue vessel. Rescue workers can be struggling to pull some of the migrants aboard the coast guard dinghy. Around 2,600 migrants were rescued in 25 operations between Sunday and Monday, the coast guard said. A total of 16 bodies were also recovered on the two days, the coast guard added. More than 3,740 migrants have drowned on their way to Europe so far this year, nearly matching the death toll recorded for all of 2015 when three times as many people took to the seas, according to the United Nations refugee agency.
