A U.S. federal judge blocked Aetna's $34 billion merger with rival Humana, saying it was illegal under antitrust law. The judge said the proposed deal would "substantially lessen competition in the sale of individual Medicare Advantage plans in 364 counties and in the sale of individual commercial insurance on the public exchanges in three counties in Florida." Aetna says it is considering appealing the ruling. Stocks of most major healthcare companies fell on the news. Last week, The New York Post reported a federal judge is expected to block another proposed deal - a $54 billion merger between health insurer Anthem and Cigna.
